The Art of Beautiful Fabric Banners

Outdoor Banners

Mettje Swift designs beautiful banners. They are much more than signage, they are art. They can function as a way finding or information display, but are inspired by an art form as ancient as mankind. It is the expression of dreams and passion, loyalties and aspirations.

Outdoor banners include suspended across the street banners, main street banners and light pole banners. Banner Art also make canopies, play shelters, shades and family flags. The banners are fabricated by Banner Art Production Studio, a team of craftspeople. Mettje Swift develops the banner art from images provided by the client, such as the Telluride Film Festival Posters, Habitat for Humanity, Rotary logos used as a design element and symbols of any kind that mean something. Mettje prepares a design, develops a logo as needed and submits the design work for approval. Mettje hand draws the patterns and the makers cut and piece the fabric art.

Main Street Banners across the street fabric murals

An across the street mural banner is suspended over the street in Grand Junction, Colorado. The community is very proud of its artistic heritage and wished to pronounce their support of the Arts through the use of this City Banner.

Snowdown across the street banner

The photo above was an across the street informational, yet fun, banner for the Durango Rotary big fundraising event. Street Banners are well suited to announcing fundraising events and giving sponsors recognition.

Our outdoor banners are suspended art Installations. Mettje Swift develops the banner art from images such as the Telluride Film posters, and makes the patterns for her team. All patterns are archived.

The fabrication process is called border applique assemblage and is a very unique process resulting in banners as beautiful as stained glass. We hot cut every single piece off of the pattern, to prevent fraying. Each assembled ‘tapestry’ is made much like leaded glass, and shines like stained glass. The individual pieces of the design are sewn back together along a narrow border with a zigzag stitch.  The final work is finished per its intended installation.

Celebration Banners

Celebration banners are particularly suited to the bright colors and clear graphics of Mettje’s designs and the fabrication by the Banner Art Production Studio. Each finished ‘tapestry’ is pieced together to create the final banner much like leaded glass, and shines like stained glass.

Parade of Homes Banners

The Parade of Homes announces itself with a banner that tells the story through strong graphics and bright, contrasting colors.

Music in the Mountains Banners

The Music in the Mountains banner is still beautiful and has been displayed 2 to 4 weeks a year for over 20 years. Our work is not only beautiful, but long lasting.

Light Pole Banners

The fabric is a heavy-duty yet lightweight Solarmax 200 & 420 Denier Bright Nylon, the standard in the industry. It is vat dyed, meaning the dye is poured into the vat of liquid nylon and then it is spun into a roll of fabric much like cotton oxford cloth. Using these outdoor fabrics ensures your banners are beautiful. Our materials are made in the USA. All wear points are reinforced, and grommets are set in 1 1/2″ or 2″ polypropylene webbing. City installation crews love to hang our mural banners!

Fabrication Process for Translucent Fabric Banners

Our banners are automatically two sided. Sewn by border applique, the design is hot cut and pieced to assure pure, brilliant color. They are sturdy but lightweight and have a longer, more  beautiful life than banners made of heavier, opaque materials with printing.

We make the finest of banners, and have found our prices to be highly competitive. And our banners are more artistic and more versatile. We plan for date and time, location and sponsor changes in the future. We mend and restore banners because we value our work.
